From the Director’s Desk: Appointing a Kids Ambassador at SoFAB

As our children’s programming at SoFAB expands, we have created a Kids Menu of fun activities. Recently, The SoFAB Culinary Library and Archive initiated its monthly storytelling program. We also have gardening programs and cooking programs on weekends for kids, as well as a long-popular kids culinary camp each summer. Still in the planning stages is a huge play area for children where they can learn through play about healthy eating and the farm-to-table process.

With so much going on for children we decided that we needed a Kids Ambassador who would exemplify the healthy cooking and eating habits we are promoting. We did not need to look far from home. We have watched Kid Chef Eliana cook and grow since SoFAB opened.

We are proud and happy to announce that Kid Chef Eliana (Eliana de Las Casas), the award- winning 13-year old chef, radio show host, and author, has been named the Kids Ambassador of the SoFAB Institute. In that capacity Kid Chef Eliana will represent the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, the SoFAB Culinary Library and Archive, as well as the other divisions of the SoFAB Institute. Kid Chef Eliana and the SoFAB Institute will work together to spread the message of sustainability, healthy cooking and eating, and whole person literacy (including nutritional and reading literacy).

“I’m excited to be the Kids Ambassador for SoFAB. I look forward to furthering my mission to get kids to eat and cook fresh foods with their families,” says Kid Chef Eliana. Considering the SoFAB Culinary Library and Archive’s goal of amassing the largest collection of children’s culinary literature in the country, who could be better to represent our youth outreach? (And by the way, in March we received dozens of children’s culinary books which will be expanding our collection. An exhibit on children’s culinary literature is in the works.)

Kid Chef Eliana – Eliana de Las Casas – is a Taste Award honoree for Special Achievement in the Outstanding Kids category for her role as host of “Cool Kids Cook,” her weekly web radio show on the VoiceAmerica Kids network. The TASTE AWARDS are the highest awards for the Lifestyle Entertainment Industry. She accepted her award at a red carpet event at Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California in January.

Her second cookbook, Cool Kids Cook: Louisiana, won a 2013 Parents’ Choice Approved Award. Her third cookbook, Cool Kids Cook: Fresh & Fit (Pelican Publishing) has just been released. It focuses on fresh foods and healthier recipes for families. Her mission is to encourage families to cook together and to inspire kids to become culinary explorers. As Eliana always says, “Cool kids cook and get creative in the kitchen!” It is our mission to have those kids carry forward their skills into adulthood.
