Mrs. Call’s Orange Cake

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1 cup dairy sour cream
  • grated rind of 1 orange
  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg yolks, sour cream, and orange rind. Beat until light and fluffy. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir into the first mixture.

Beat the egg whites until stiff, but NOT dry. Fold into the mixture. Turn the batter into an oiled and floured (10-cup) bundt pan. Allow to sit ten minutes.

Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 1 hour. Remove the pan from the oven and let it stand for 10 minutes.

Loosen the cake carefully around the edges and turn it out onto a plate with a rim. Immediately pour hot orange syrup over the top of the cake. Slice thinly.

Orange Syrup

  • juice of 2 oranges
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • dash salt

Combine these ingredients and boil 3 to 4 minutes. Immediately pour over the cake.
